Confession of a Tamed Shopaholic

27 04 2009

Visited an old friend yesterday and it was so refreshing. Its been awhile since we’ve seen each other; we’ve been distant ever since my unemployment. We spent about an hour to reacquaint ourselves but I’ve realized immediately that I had changed. My obsession with impulsive and habitual spending was nullified…gone…finito! Its official and I’m here to report that I’m a tamed shopaholic. My long-lost buddy, Macy’s, is no longer a driving force in my life.

My reputation has proceeded me for years and I’ve been known to be a spontaneous shopper. I would buy things for my different moods, happy or sad; good or bad. Prices were red flags to me and I used to charge it furiously like an agitated bull. So it was a challenge for me to visit Macy’s (watch section in particular) without some sort of trepidation. I was determined to face the beast and even tried on my coveted Bulova watch. It glittered against my wrist and I soaked in the dream as the sales lady, Jody, tried dilligently to entice the sale. She confessed that Macy’s was giving a 50% sale on the watch and it was the lowest she’s ever seen it sell for… Oh and do I have a Macy’s charge?bulovaNow this item I have been admiring from afar for about 5 years; the price was so high, it made this shopaholic’s head spin. I told Jody that I had the store card but overrided her pitch when I passed her back the watch. I thanked her kindly for her time and walked away. I’m proud of myself and realized that I finally grew some discipline.  I still love that Bulova watch but for now I will dance with it in my dreams.

Stumbling Blocks

So I’m three weeks deep in my exercise regimen and like clockwork, I knew I would face an obstacle sooner or later. I’ll be honest and admit that when I like something I tend to be monotonous with it. Last week in my Small Victory post, I shared that I was using small weights along with my workouts. Trust me, the results were amazing BUT I ended up overdoing it and stressed my back muscles. The aches has plagued me for two days now and after deep massages and tepid Epsom salt baths, I’m still feeling quite sore. So I evidently missed a couple of days from my routine due to my situation. GREAT! So, I’m here to report that when you’re exercising to take it easy. It took months to put on the weight and for me its been about a year. I will now regulate the same amount of time into losing it. And keep on moving.

A Playground Nightmare

19 04 2009

Spring was in full bloom this past weekend. I’ve even noticed on Twitter people from both sides of the coasts were experiencing the same sunny, warm and adventurous weather. Since it was such a beautiful day and I had a ten year old under my watch, I decided to let her burn some energy at the park. Once we arrived, her first choice of activity was the swings. So I let her join the small group of kids and sat on an adjacent bench with my watchful eye. I noticed three larger girls monopolizing the two swings but decided not to intervene. Every child should learn how to speak up for themselves and the art of negotiation. But after ten minutes, I noticed that she had not budge from that spot from when we first got there. I even noticed a small boy politely asking these girls if they could swing next. It disheartened me when the girls ignored him and kept sharing the swings amongst their friends.

In my authoritative voice, (thanks to my five years of working with children) I addressed the girls and stressed the diplomacy of sharing. I knew by reprimanding them it would cause friction and to be honest, these kids were bigger than me and I’m an adult. After the backtalk accompanied with the neck-jerking, rolling eyes, and hissing of teeth, they finally obliged and only allowed the smaller children to use the swing. Since when is it right for children to address adults with such disrespect? Back in the day, I wouldn’t even speak to strangers with such ill mannered tones. These times are obviously behind us but boy do I miss the structured environment that children were once raised upon. At least I can reminisce.

Beyonce, A Successful Crossover?

I’ve been a Beyonce fan ever since I seen her sashaying in the Destiny’s Child No, No, No video. From first sight, I knew she was legend to be a star. Her presence was dominant and demanded your attention. Instantly she became the prominent member amongst the rest and in my eyes it was Beyonce & Destiny’s Child. Now I’ve patiently followed the group with its 3 transformations and remained a dedicated devotee because of Bee. I knew her solo career was imminent because her celebrity was skyrocketing, (B is for BIG). And on her solo debut, Crazy In Love, Beyonce showed us just what bootylicious was. Since then, Beyonce has spun numerous successful albums, received many musical accolades and even became the face of Loreal. Let’s not forget she made JayZ bid adieu to his bachelorhood. So its so hard for me to believe that with all Bee’s triumphs that her acting career is mute.

She became a thespian in 2001 with Carmen: A Hip Hopera which if you weren’t an MTV buff, you’ve missed it. Luke performances ensued and we all watched as Jennifer Hudson snagged that Oscar for Dreamgirls, (well deserved). I still think Beyonce has gradually improved. On Cadillac Records she did her thing and even revived Etta James’s song…hello, she sang for President Obama and the Mrs.! Still in all, I’m a little skeptical with Beyonce’s next venture, Obsessed which is scheduled for release on April 24th. I do hope she can bring it and make this character come to life but my friends think otherwise, (shout-out to VL). Do you think Beyonce will be a successful crossover?

A Small Victory!!!

16 04 2009

My hard work is paying off and now I’m going to share my small victory with you. So far since I’ve started my bootcamp, I’ve lost 3.5 pounds. This is a small milestone but I know its just the first of many more to come. How did I do it? Simply by changing my habits. I’ve made it my business to eat healthier foods and work out each day for 30 minutes.

I’ll be the first to admit, this was NOT easy for me. Removing the fried foods, greasy chips, and candy was like taking a limb from me. Instead I opted for baked or steamed foods, crisp fruits, and nuts (preferably almonds). I’ve also learn about portion control which has helped me with another problem, overeating. Less is so much more! Lastly, I’ve added salads to my meals and drinking lots of water.

As for the exercise, I’m still on my Leslie Sansone’s Walk Away the Pounds tape. To get an extra benefit, I’ve added 2 pound hand weights to my workouts. This has helped me to strengthen my arms as I go along. I also have a buddy, (good look 1cent) which has made it actually fun to exercise. One more lesson to share which is to park your car and try walking to some of your destinations. This has made a world of difference to me with building my endurance.

Petition for The Game

12 04 2009

the-gameI’ve heard a disappointing rumor that CW’s The Game is going to be canceled. Now that Girlfriends is gone, The Game is one of the last television shows featuring African American characters in entertaining quandaries. I love me some Derwin and would love to see what will become of his future with the Melanie/Janay triangle. I want to know if Tasha Mack will finally find her king and get back on her feet from the corporate downsizing. Now that we’ve learned the core of Malik’s insecurities, will his father’s presence change him? Is it really the Pitts for Jason and Kelly? And will the truth come out about Tasha’s interference in hooking Jason up with Stacy Dash’s character?

These are questions of an avid fan who wants to know the outcome of these trials. And if you’re like me you would want to find a way to make it happen. What I found with a little research is that there is still a possibility that we can save The Game. Please sign up and share your thoughts on this link and join the petition against cancelling this great show.

UPDATE ON THE GAME…BET has picked up the show and working on the new season. Click here for more information!!

The 2 Faces of Lil’ Kim

10 04 2009

Lil Kim is the main reason why I’ve been continuously watching this season’s Dancing With The Stars. Her first performance was good; actually captivating, because I’ve never seen Kim dance before. I’ve seen her body-bopping in her videos but I wouldn’t categorize that as really dancing. Nevertheless, Kim has continued to astound me each week with her graceful agility and her refreshing humbleness. I’m very proud of her dance floor achievements and have high hopes for Kim to win. Or at least come in second place next to Gilles Marini who is a heavy contender and has made a habit of steaming up the screen since his performance in the Sex And The City movie. Ladies, you remember that outdoor shower scene don’t you?

On the other hand, what I find to be incredibly disappointing about Lil Kim is her altered physical appearance. And frankly, it is NOT an improvement. She is barely recognizable and to be honest, L.K. reminds me of a miniature version of Latoya Jackson. We have all witnessed the unnecessary transformation of Kim. First was the breast augmentation that Kim so proudly modeled for us at 1999 MTV Awards. Do you recall that shrilling moment when Diana Ross couldn’t resist paying homage to her breast? I’m still flabbergasted by that one. This was a subtle change for Kim and although I didn”t agree with it, I still condoned her choice; she looked good.

Lets transcend to present day which is actually ten years later. Kim has not only added buxom boobs and an ample derriere to her petite frame but she has also changed her facial features as well. I could only imagine how her mother must feel about that one. These surgeries weren’t necessary or warranted as preventative. On the real, it could have been detrimental to her health. Let’s not forget about the unfortunate example Donda West has taught us.

old-lil-kim

Still bemused by Kim’s decision to plasticized her face, I’ve come to the following conclusion on why Kim chose this direction. Stating the obvious, Kim wasn’t loving herself unconditionally. She wanted to change what she thought were her imperfections. She didn’t love that nose, cheekbones, lips, and eyes. She felt her breasts were too small and her behind too flat. What Kim has to realize is that these are God’s gifts and to him we are all beautiful.
